The Beauty of Forgiveness

Last year I attended an English service at a local church. The pastor was Indonesian but proficient in English. The sermon was easy to be understood as he used simple English sentences but the topic opened my eyes about  "forgiveness".

Departed from Mathew 18, the topic jumped into verse 18-35, the forgiveness talk deeply about the underlying reason why it is difficult to forgive and forget others mistake. The King has loosen and forgiven the first servant's debt entirely of which amount is 10,000 talents that he could not pay in time but promise to pay in full. However, then the first servant met his fellow servant (second servant) owing a hundred denarii and he could not forgive him although the second servant has asked mercy to give him a time for paying in full but the person threw the second servant in prison  as a punishment.

One talent is equal to 6,000 denarii. The denarii was the basic daily wage for a laborer. In First Century of  Israel the typical laborer would work 6 days a week, thus yielding a weekly wage of 6 denarii. The lesser servant's debt was 100 denarii, or 16.67 weeks worth of a day-laborers time. Therefore the first servant felt that he would have settled the huge debt if the King had given him a time and this is the reason why he could not forgive his fellow servant for a little debt.

It is truly true that we often fail to comprehend someone's mistake because we feel better or never been in same situation.Of course, I am a member of the group. It can not be counted how many times I could say "ck ck ck, how come he could not understand or how come he did such silly things ... and how come ...." Why ...? We can not forgive much because we don't feel forgiven much!!

What the Lord says about forgiveness

The Word says if you can not forgive others' sin our Heavenly Father would not forgive our sin as well (see Mat 6:14-15, 18:35).  More over, the parable of prodigal son speaks much about the great mercy that the father gives to his prodigal son who has spent all the monies away, yet the father welcomes him with sincere love (Luke 15:11-24).

Forgiveness could bring benefits to your health and mind, among others:
  • Heart rates and blood pressures were 2.5 times lower than live in a grudge.
  • Decrease physical complaints such as aches and pains
  • Improve sleep quality and decrease in fatigue
  • Decrease anger, negative thought and anxiety
  • Make you calm and in control.
  • Release your stress and bring (more) happiness to your life
  • Help you stay focused on your goal
  • Make you feel younger and relax
  • Get more friendship
  • etc
Let us do forgiveness although it's hard, difficult but not impossible as it only needs prayer and obedience.
